Tuesday, February 23rd was my 6 months research appointment to check and test a few things.
Order of the day was fasting, 24 hour urine collection (1 day prior to visit).
Test performed were a mixed tolerance test (where they serve me the delicious...shake) and collect blood samples every 15 minutes or so for about 2 hours.
Drew an A1c
Performed an EKG as well as an eye exam.
Ran the usual vital signs.
All is good, except I just got my A1c result and it is at 5.9%. I am very disapointed with this result as I have been working very hard to maintain my glucose levels since the last visit at a 5.7% A1c.
So I have just made the decision to not change any of my exercise routine, as I believe that I do plenty for now, but change my breakfast routine, and cut my lovely breads, add more protein in the form of eggs and some whole wheat muffin with it.
As I think that my high carb morning intake is what shakes my A1c results with those spikes.
Anyways, a little "depressed" right now about it, will aim for better in 2-3 months from now.

82.1 mile ride in cold and wet weather.
Regular 140gr carbs breakfast for 6+ units of insulin.
Left at 11:45am on this gray January Sunday at 180 BG.
My Endo Dr. De Santis asked me to NOT disconnect my pump but to set a temporary basal as it has been reported of athletes going into ketoacidosis (too much sugar in blood for not enough insulin). This effect can happen especially when training hard, as the liver would then release stored glucose to the body to help with energy burning and muscles starving.
Average blood glucose for that day: 113 (tested) / 107 (CGM)
High: 143 (tested) / 188 (CGM) after breakfast
Low: 81 (tested) / 70 (CGM)
Total Insulin: 30.5 units
Basal: 12.6 units (41%)
Bolus: 17.9 units (59%)
Total carbs load: 458 grams
Total exercise: 343 minutes at high intensity

73 miles ride in the cold
Weather: No rain, wet air, wet roads, average temperature 49.
Ride start 11:30am
Goal: 70 to 80 miles, average speed 17
Blood sugar levels: 98 at start
Issues during ride: Could never keep my sugar above 85 according to CGM. Tested at 2:20pm and got a 92.
Food intake before ride: about 130gr
Food intake during ride: about 200gr
Total insulin during ride:1.2 units
Total insulin intake: 8.8 units
Feeling: low energy during entire ride.
Conclusion: Again, when cold and even just wet air, should start higher than 100. Or I can't seem to keep the sugars in for energy as they are probably being eaten up to stay warm.

Running in the wet and cold weather
Hard or not, it is good. Using very little insulin, probably having to cut back 20 to 30% even eating more than usual to keep the levels up and to keep me warm.
Ran a total of about 25 miles this week. 9.5 miles on Friday, cold, windy and wet.
Exercise is the best for diabetes management. I can prove it!

Riding in the wet and cold weather
Well, type 1, wet and cold weather is harder on my body than I thought.
Went on a 40 miles light ride on Dec 22nd and a harder 60 miles ride on Jan 3rd.
Both times it was cold and a little wet. On both occasion I left the house a little high (>120 but <150) with 3 power bars, one banana and either a water bottle or as last Sunday a bottle with 2 emergen C in it.
Of course the 40 miles ride was shorter and easier, but I was struggling on the last 4 miles hill to keep my glucose from falling bellow the 70s as I ran out of food.
On Sunday, after 40 miles, and still 2 major hills to climb, I had to stop and feed immediately as I tested at 45.
On either ride, I did not bolus for the carbs I took while riding.
Draw your own conclusion, but I will try to bring more food next time or/and faster simple carbs for quick "bounce".
Other than that, my lunch runs 3 times a week are serving me good, I am able to keep my levels in check even while I am doing a low carb diet and trying hard to continue a high fiber food intake.
Later.

Lows blows!
Bad past week and weekend with lows...
Have been struggling keeping my BG up in the last week. I don't know what or who to blaim it on (except for me I guess). Perhaps I keep miss counting my carbs, eat too many simple carbs or what.
One thing I know is that I am WAY more sensitive again to carbs (simple and complex) since I started exercising now back from France. Still haven't ridden my bike with this polar weather but have been consistent with the running my 7 miles every other days.
Exercise and cold weather might also be a reason for extra fast carbohydrate burning ratio. Not sure but will keep on working hard trying to stay above 70 and as usual stay bellow 170.

Juice injection is over. now all we are doing are checks, and blood draws. Today we did a mix tolerance meal with 200cc draw and placed the dexcom CGM on.
